Fresno May Limit New Bike Paths Near Ag

the fens

Well, seems like there's an interesting debate going on in Fresno County between farmers and cyclists.   The Fresno Bee and the Fresno County Farm Bureau reports that farmers are not supportive of bike paths near their crops. Growers say that they do not want new bike paths in agricultural areas because bicyclists could be exposed to pesticides.

This is an interesting dilemma between farmers of fruits and veggies and the stuff that's good for us... and bikers and cyclists who are doing things that are good for us/them too.

It's probably not the best idea to ride in a cloud of pesticide right?  But is a good idea to eat fruit sprayed heavily with pesticides?

According to the Bee, Fresno currently has 134 miles of bikeways:

  • 14 miles of bike paths
  • 113 miles of bike lanes
  • 7 miles of bike routes

We'll keep you posted on the ins and outs of this growing (ahem) debate.
